Inexpensive and does the job.....![]()
I purchased this item to check my house for heating/cooling adjustments and checking insulation and leaks. It has far greater temperature range than I will ever need and it has performed very well, is rugged ( dropped it a couple of times ) and inexpensive. The hard case is a big plus, and overall, it is a great value.
Affordable IR thermometer![]()
Bought one of these a few years ago upon seeing Alton Brown use one in his show "Good Eats". He uses a model like this one to gauge the exact temperature of a frying pan or grill or whatnot. I also found it useful for looking for drafts in my house.
Very easy to use. Just pull the trigger and point the laser at the spot that you want to measure. (The laser doesn't actually do the reading, it just lets you know where you're pointing the IR sensor.)
Accuracy seems pretty good. A radioshack thermometer in my room reads 75.4 degrees and the IR thermometer reads the temperature of the case of the radioshack thermometer at 74.9 -- Only 0.5 degrees variance between the two seems pretty good to me.
The only complaint I have is that my specific one has a glitch in it where occasionally the whole thing will "lock-up" and have odd characters displayed on the screen. I'm not sure if this is a quality control thing or a general model defect. The good news is that I've figured out that if I use a little "percussive maintenance" (a slap to the side) it will work properly again. I suspect there is a loose connection somewhere, but I haven't bothered to take it apart yet and see if I can fix it.
Overall a nice little IR thermometer. I dinged it one star because of the mediocre quality control, but maybe I just got a bad one.

Very nice IR thermometer![]()
I shopped pretty hard for this item. It has a 1:15 spot size which is nice, and unlike other units it goes down to -76F. The plug-in on the side for a thermocouple probe (probe not included with this model) is a plus. It comes in a blow-molded plastic case. Buy the one Amazon sells directly and get free shipping!
Physically the unit is designed well. The battery compartment door is a bit stiff, and the trigger spring is rather hard, but these are minor quibbles. The main large temperature display always shows the current IR measurement, and holds it when the trigger is released. The unit stays on for maybe a minute or so afterward, including the backlight (if enabled).
There are lots of display modes for the secondary smaller temperature display and they are easy to access via the rubber keys under the display. Min and max are recorded over the measurement period in which the trigger is held in. Average is a true running average, and not the simple average of min & max. Probe temp is shown when a probe is plugged in and prob temp is selected for the secondary display. Emissivity is adjustable from 0 to 100, so you can calibrate the IR reading with the probe reading if desired.
My unit came with the pointing laser and backlight off by default, not sure why, but they are easy to enable via the rubber buttons. There is also a "always on" mode that might not be obvious, as the laser does not come on, even if it is enabled. So if you find that your unit is not automatically turning off, perhaps you put it in this mode (there is an icon on the display too).
As a test I tried adjusting the emissivity to around 75 so that my body temperature would read correctly when scanning my forehead and reading the max over 5 seconds or so. This gave reliable readings one day, and unreliable the next, so you probably can't use it as a replacement for a fever thermometer. That was just an experiment, and I wasn't expecting it to work reliably in that fashion.
It's fun to check the temp of things on the stove & in the fridge & freezer, and it works well for finding cold air infiltrating our house. Great item, everyone should have one of these things in their science kit / tool box!
Cool MAstercool Thermometer![]()
Simply as advertised, and was more than could be expected . Extremely versatile. Check outside temp from your chair by just shooting the window-, check a BBQ pit for Done'ness-, Check hard to reach pipes-, check the temp of low lying clouds( I kid you not)
Product DescriptionMasterCool Universal Hydraulic Flaring Tool Set
Professional Results!![]()
I used this tool to make several flares. It works great. It's a bit awkward at first holding the die and tubing - but in minutes it was like I used it for years. I like this tool because you can bring the flaring tool to the car. Some of the other higher priced and higher quality flaring tools are set-up in a vice. If you have a brake line snaked through a car you-re pretty much out of luck bringing the brake line to the tool. With this one - you take the tool to the car.
I highly recommend it. One short-coming is that it doesn't make 30 degree flare for An and JIC fitting. Oh well.

Included: a three foot thermo-coupler probe for all contact temperatures, and a free MSC52220 1" thermometer.
Great Digital Infrared Thermometer![]()
This infrared thermometer is very easy to use and very practical. Besides keeping track of cooking temperatures in my cookware,
- I have learned where all the areas in my house leaks heat/cooling,
- checked various parts of my refrigerator/freezer for level of cooling and freezing,
- checked the outside temperature in a few seconds
- monitor how cold or hot my car gets
- and the list keeps growing....
What a wonderful toy for us big kids.
One warning: The picture of the thermometer kit and case is misleading. The free thermocouple is not a probe, it is just a wire. It works, but just having a wire to measure temperature is rather useless. Not something you want to dip into liquids or over a flame.
Even with this misleading advertisement, it is still a wonderful piece of equipment.
Good product no instructions![]()
I love the product, however, the instructions were so poor they didn't even tell how to turn the unit on. Also, it has many functions on it that I have no idea of how to enable them. Very disapointed.
Excellent Thermometer![]()
Simple to use, and very long range. Excellent for my paranormal team as it has the additional ambient air probe that comes with the case. I was pleasantly surprised to find 2 AA Batteries with the case as well - perhaps I missed that in the description of contents.
Great options, great price, fast shipping, very durable - Definitely recommended for anyone who needs fast and accurate surface temperatures. (Also the 30:1 ratio is spectacular.)
Product DescriptionInfrared thermometer ranges from -58 to 932 degrees F, with large easy to read 1" LCD display, scan mode, maximum temperature display, and F/C button. The unit includes 2 AAA batteries, instruction manual and a plastic molded carrying case.
An Excellent Product![]()
Just got my Mastercool IR thermometer the other day. It's easy to use and works exactly as it's supposed to.
There's no on/off switch, simply point the trigger and shoot and you'll get an instant read. The unit automatically shuts itself off after 15 seconds. The laser beam is very useful and let's you know the exact spot you're reading.
the LCD screen is backlit, and allows you to view readings in C OR F. Battery life is approx 15hrs (uses 2AAA).
I highly recommend this product.
Excellent for use in cooking, quite affordable![]()
I bought this to use at my stove when cooking. It takes a little getting used to, since surface temperatures are significantly different from interior temperatures. Like, when cooking caramel, the surface temperature seems usually to be about 10F cooler than the interior (measured with a normal digital thermometer), whereas things in the oven, the surface will obviously be much hotter than the interior (so much hotter that this is really only useful on the stovetop.)
Once you learn to compensate for stovetop use, though, this thing is incredibly handy. Checking frying oil to make sure it's at 375F for best deep-frying results, checking on confections to stop them at the right temperature, making sure custards in a double-boiler aren't approaching a boil, I use this thing all the time. It sits on the shelf immediately above and to the left of my stove so it's within easy reach when my intuition isn't enough or I'm trying to do many things at once.
This was the least expensive one I could find on Amazon, too, with a decent FOV. For cooking, this one's 1:12 view cone is great -- means when you point and shoot from a foot away, it's sampling a 1" circle. Some of the other inexpensive ones have cheaper optics and some are as bad as 1:1, which means to sample a 1" circle you'd have to hold it an inch away from the surface -- completely unfeasible when cooking something like caramel, if you value your skin.
How hot is that?![]()
I've been wanting one for years, but they've finally gotten cheap enough to buy just to geek around the house.
I now know the warm and cold parts of my fridge. I know the best place to keep wine in my basement. I know which windows need to be replaced and my pancakes never burn. Yeah, it is kinda clunky and the display is a touch hard to read but come on, it works great.
